Writing Update
Just Keep Writing
I’ve got 3 fun things to share with you today. While I haven’t been writing as much over here lately, it’s all for a good reason, as I think you’ll see. Definitely hang till the end.
1. A New Article
First, I have a new article up today at The Gospel Coalition that I really hope you will read and think on.
We desperately need a recovery of the Christ-centered reading and spirituality of the Song of Songs. And in this article, I introduce my case, reasons, and vision for reading the Song for our souls. Here’s how I open the article:
I want you to rethink the Song of Solomon (often called the Song of Songs), or at least expand your understanding, application, and appreciation of the Song to your spirituality. Your soul, and not just your body, needs this book.
While the Song certainly has wisdom to share about the intimate joys of marriage, this isn’t the main message of Solomon’s poem. Like the rest of the Old Testament, the Song foreshadows and showcases the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. As the apostle Paul unveiled in Ephesians 5, marriage is a vehicle for the mystery of Christ and the church. The Song testifies along with Ephesians that “this mystery is profound” (Eph. 5:32).
Throughout the centuries, the Song has been underinterpreted as having no correspondence to Christ and his Bride, and overinterpreted with every word and picture decoded and distorted. To avoid the latter error, many have fallen into the former one. Christ is missing. We need to retrieve the spiritual, Christ-centered reading of the Song. And we can find it in the theological heritage of Reformed spirituality.
2. Another New Article
Second, I have a new article up at New Churches on Spurgeon and the Preaching Voice. If you didn’t know, I have a monthly column at New Churches where I am writing through Spurgeon’s wonderful book, Lectures to My Students.
In addition to this piece on the voice, I’ve written on:
3. New Publishing Contract
Thrilled to share that I’ve signed a 2 book contract with my friends and partners at The Good Book Company. I’m so excited about these books!
The first book will be on the unique promises Jesus makes us in the Gospels—his “I will” statements. We know Christ’s “I am” statements, but do you know his “I will” statements? I’m looking forward to exploring these promises of Jesus and the joy, trust, and encouragement he wants us to have from him and in him.
The second book will be on biblical spirituality—how to experience God, spiritual formation, etc. It is a heart-expanding reality that God wants to meet with us, hear our prayers, and enjoy fellowship with us. He really does invite us to seek him. I’ll explore how we can enjoy God, be transformed by God, and do it in the ways God has given us. At a recent men’s retreat, I taught some of these concepts and I was surprised to hear many of the men say, “Will you write a book on this? Because I’ll pre-order now.” At the time, I hadn’t thought of it. But here we are.
I’ve never had a project(s) with this much interest, excitement, and offers from multiple publishers that I love. But TGBC and I are running it back after partnering on Humble Calvinism, The Soul-Winning Church, The Risen King, and The Newborn King (2026). Honored to write, to serve, and enjoy Jesus together.
So, as you can see, I’ve been writing a lot, and trying to write more books. I’ve also written an ebook on a theology for church planters that will release soon. I’m actively working on The Newborn King, and look forward to sharing it with y’all for next year’s advent season. So, if you think of me, I’d love your prayers for these books. My mantra remains: Just Keep Writing.
Thanks for reading.

Praise God Congratulations looking forward to the books and these articles.
Oh man!!! The idea of a book on the “I will” statements is fascinating and gets me excited. What a concept! I’ve never even considered diving into them. That would make a fantastic sermon series or group curriculum too. I love forward to reading it when it comes out.
