Spurgeon Saturday: Graduation
Thrilled to share that yesterday—May 9, 20205—I graduated with my PhD in biblical spirituality from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.
My dissertation is titled, The Treasury of Solomon: A Retrieval of Charles H. Spurgeon’s (1834–1892) Spirituality of the Song of Songs.
Studying Spurgeon’s sermons on the Song—all 81 of them!—was endlessly enjoyable. Loved every minute. His insights on the Song were so rich and edifying because they are filled with Christ. I hope to get it published and share it with y’all.
I’m so grateful for the many professors (Whitney, Hamilton, Haykin, Pennington, Haste, Wellum, Harrod, Pierre, Yuille, and more) and friends that cheered me on along the way. I couldn’t have done with it the support from Natalie and our kids. And as I reflect on God’s grace, I’m overwhelmed with gratitude. My prayer continues to be, “Thank you, God. Wow. Thank you.”

Spurgeon + The Song
I love today’s Spurgeon quote. It comes from his daily devotional, the evening entry for May 9th. The same day I graduated. And the entry is on the Song of Songs. Too good!
“Come, my beloved, let us go forth into the field … let us see if the vine flourish.”
— Song of Solomon 7:11,12
“Those who have most fellowship with Christ are not recluses or hermits, who have much time to spare, but indefatigable labourers who are toiling for Jesus, and who, in their toil, have him side by side with them, so that they are workers together with God. Let us remember then, in anything we have to do for Jesus, that we can do it, and should do it in close communion with him.”
— C. H. Spurgeon
