Christmas Meditation: A Universe Fit for the King
“His kingdom will have no end” (Luke 1:33)
Meditate with me on the expansive and non-ending nature of Christ’s Kingdom.
The angel Gabriel told Mary how her son’s—the Son, the eternal Word—kingdom “will have no end” (Luke 1:33). Many moons ago, the prophet Isaiah also told us how the Messiah’s Kingdom “will be vast, and its prosperity will never end” (Isaiah 9:7). There are two essential thoughts about the no-end-in-sight-ness of Christ’s Kingdom. Let’s take the obvious one first.
There is no viable threat to Jesus’s kingdom. Nothing and no one will take down the King, who, as we sing this time of year, “rules the world with truth and grace.” Satan will try to topple the Kingdom. Predictable. But he has failed, is failing, and will fail. Human governments keep trying to restrict the reign of Jesus over their citizens. But they fail, too. Sin will be steamrolled and neutralized by the King. Death was no match for Christ, the Conqueror of the Grave. Christ’s Kingdom is vast, going to every tribe, nation, and people…and beyond.
There is a second dimension for us to consider about Christ’s reign having no end.
The Scriptures tell us that Jesus created all things and sustains the entire Universe by the word of his power (Colossians 1:17; Hebrews 1:3). Saturn is Jesus’s. Distant galaxies are the Lord God’s. The entire Universe doesn’t implode, explode, or get deleted from reality because Christ is King of the Cosmos. He reigns over a Universe that is continually expanding and has no end.
NASA and other scientists of the 360-degree space beyond our planet see that our Universe is growing. Growing into what? No one on this planet knows. But scientists see that our Universe is vast, going on forever, and has no geographical end in sight.
And it makes perfect sense for Christmas.
For Christ’s Kingdom to go on “forever” and have “no end” means that Jesus’s reign is not threatened by time or Space. The Universe is expanding because Christ’s reign has “no end.” The Universe isn’t big enough for Jesus’s reign. It must grow because it is the domain of Christ’s everlasting Kingdom. Grace upon grace in never-ending Space. Christmas will have no end. Merry Christmas!
